The Cumbria Steam & Vintage Vehicle Society Ltd has been bringing together vintage vehicles events to Cark Airfield in Flookburgh, near Grange-over-Sands, for one massive summer gathering. If everything goes to plan the dates for 2020 are weekend 25th and 26th July. A huge colourful and noisy weekend event with a variety of entertainments, the Steam Gathering features splendid steam engines and vintage commercal vehicles, as well as hundreds of classic transport favourites including cars, motorcycles, military vehicles and pedal cycles. Being situated in a mainly agricultural area, tractors, farm machinery and stationary engines are well represented and always attract considerable attention.
Racing events. The Three annual Cartmel Spring Bank Holiday racing meetings at Cartmel Racecourse near Grange over Sands are always great days out. As well as action packed days of racing, there’s a hugely popular funfair, a good range of trade stands public bars and numerous catering outlets. If your looking for somewhere to stay which is about 10 mins from Cartmel the Haven Lakelands is the place to do it. For details of meetings please visit www.cartmel-racecourse.co.uk
The vendors come from both the locality and a little further away. Some have a north Lancashire address but the majority have a local telephone code, at the time of my visit. Several stalls were selling meat products, be it smoked or frozen. There is a honey producer selling all things made by bees. Only one vegetable stall. But this is to be expected as the nearby Howbarrow Organic offer a box scheme, delivering organic vegetables to your door every fortnight.
